D Day Vigil 2013 on June 6th, 2013 at 1300 (1:00 p.m.) on Parliament Hill, Ottawa    “It’s an abject betrayal by the government of Canada and that’s all there is to it.” Major Mark Campbell, Afghanistan, double amputee amongst other serious injuries. This is what happens when elected representatives fail to fulfill the Sacred Obligation they bear for those they send to war.   On June 6th, between 13-1345, veterans and politicians will gather on the steps of Parliament Hill where the disparities of respect between the valiant who fought at Juno Beach and courageous Canadians who fought in the Panjawaii Valley and the obligation that WE, we as Canadians, have to those who stand on guard for thee.   Join with many voices, one message - restore the Sacred Obligation, veterans will prevail and the spirit of this nation, a spirit forged in blood, courage, great sacrifice at Juno Beach, will be accorded to those who have sacrificed so much in Canada's name, in Kabul, Khandahar and the blood stained Panjawaii Valley.   Canadian blood. Canadian Sacrifice Lest we Forget.

The CVA will be supporting Col Ret Pat Stogran's Singing for Change event at Darcy McGee's later that evening. Funds raised will be dedicated to Wounded Warriors.

This year’s Waterloo Air Show is bigger and better than ever with new acts, a bigger static display, Food Truck Alley and the inclusion of the Canadian Aviation Expo, Canada’s premier aviation expo and trade show.

 

The Canadian Aviation Expo

 

The Waterloo Air Show is excited to announce it is teaming up with the Canadian Aviation Expo this year, meaning two events are coming together at one location.

 

The annual Canadian Aviation Expo is Canada’s premier aviation expo and trade show.  Celebrating its 20^th anniversary this year, the Expo features many displays and vendors catering to the aviation world. Guests can explore a huge selection of aviation products and new aircraft. Plus the Expo offers a ‘Fly-In’ which may see upwards of 200 small, private aircraft ‘flying in’ for the day.

 

While the air show’s primary audience is families, the Expo’s primary target is pilots and people in the aviation/aerospace industries. Together, the two events cater nicely to a wide range of audiences.

 

 

In the past, the Expo has taken place in various locations in the Greater Toronto Area including Downsview Park in Toronto, Oshawa airport and most recently Hamilton airport.

 

The Air Show

This year’s line up of acts has returning favourites and exciting new additions. Headlining the show will once again be the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and also from the Canadian Forces will be this year’s painted CF-18 Demonstration jet, representing the 2013 season’s theme: The Common Thread.

The Static Display

This year’s static display will be bigger than ever as the Waterloo Air Show arranges for aircraft to fill the tarmac for people to see up close, take photos and speak to the pilots and crew. These are aircraft parked all weekend, and are in addition to the aircraft flying in the show.

 

From the Royal Canadian Air Force we are expecting Harvard II and Hawk training aircraft from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; a Griffon helicopter from base Borden; and a Dash-8 “Gonzo” navigational trainer from Winnipeg.

 

Additional static includes a historic array of World War Two-era bomber and transports from American air museums, such as the B-17 Flying Fortress (heavy bomber), B-25 Mitchell (medium bomber), TBM Avenger (carrier-based torpedo bomber), C-123 Provider (military cargo/transport airlift), Douglas AC-47 ‘Spooky’ (ground support; military version of DC3), and a C-46 Curtiss Commando ‘Tinker Belle’(transport; only one not owned by Ice Pilots). There will also be a twin-engine Beech 18 and an Albatross, an amphibious aircraft currently used for search & rescue.

Additional Fun

This two-day family event will offer additional entertainment and activities including displays, vendors, a kid’s amusement area, an Autograph Tent, and licensed areas.

Veteran's Week 2012

 

On Sunday, November 4^th, I had the opportunity to join citizens of Waterloo Region as they took time to remember and honour our Veterans at a memorial ceremony at Veteran’s Green Park in Waterloo. Represented were veterans from the army, navy and air force as well as the Cadets from our area.   Veterans' Week is a time when Canadians honour those who have sacrificed to defend Canada's values of freedom and democracy and is a time to remember all Canadian Veterans and honour those who serve today. We commemorate the sacrifices and achievements of our brave Canadians whose legacy is the peace and security we continue to enjoy as Canadians.

Today's event included an assembly at the memorial, a traditional Veteran’s Day service ministered by Rev. Paul Ellingham, Last Post and Revelle by Lt Chris Patterson, and a wreath-laying ceremony. The sound of the bagpipes resonated throughout the area of the Lament as Adam Annandale approached the flag that sadly waved at half mast. 

This upcoming Veterans' Week (November 5^th-11^th), take time to remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride. This will be a Rally with some music, a few speakers, and Canada's Veterans, where a message can be sent to the Minister of Veterans Affairs. There will be a petition to sign that will be delivered to Parliament Hill in September.

Put a "Support The Troops" magnet on your car. Our Canadian Troops and Veterans have asked us to stand up for their rights.

We need to show these brave Canadians that we do support them, and we will stand behind them.

Warriors' Day Parade

If you've never been to Warrior' Day, I highly recommend going. Last year was my first chance to attend the CNE during Warriors' Day. It was highly invigorating. There were many displays to view for both adults and children. Many of our Veterans were in attendance- all to thank with sincerest gratitude. The Musical Salute in the evening is phenominal - bringing tears to the eyes as they had commemorated our troops serving overseas. Be sure to mark it on your calendar. See you at the EX.

The 2009 parade is dedicated to the Centennial of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC). Today more than 7500 CIC officers supervise 59000 cadets in 1156 corps and squadrons across Canada. The CIC is one of the most diversified and active components of the Canadian Forces whose goal is to ensure that cadets benefit from the best training possible and that they develop their skills to the fullest. The Warriors' Day Parade is proud to mark this significant anniversary.

Established in 1921, The Warriors' Day Parade takes place in August of each year during the opening weekend of The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The longest-running, annual parade of its' type, The Warriors' Day Parade is an important Canadian tradition and a very significant event for our Veterans, our brave men and women who currently serve in Canada's military, their families and the general public.

Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences
Centre is home to the largest Veterans’ care
facility in Canada. The facility offers long term
and complex hospital care for 500 veterans from
the Second World War and the Korean War.
The Sunnybrook Foundation’s Veterans’
Grant a Wish Fund grants wishes for these
Veterans’ throughout the year. Wishes cost
between $100 and $500, but are priceless
experiences for the Veterans’ and their families.

The New Bluewater Veterans' Highway

Welcome to Bluewater Veterans' Highway

A stretch of highway 21 will officially be designated as the Bluewater Veterans Highway.
The Goderich Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has received permission from all the municipalities between Goderich and Kincardine to officially designate that stretch.
Reverand Allan Livingston with the Legion says they want to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans from the Huron County area with this, like many other areas have done.
Livingstone says it is in the hands of the ministry of transportation to decide when to officially make the change. The Legion is picking up the tab for the signs.
He also says they are hoping for the designation to made sometime in the fall.

A big HUA to the Goderich Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the people and municipalities between Goderich and Kincardine!!

Kitchener Rangers Remember Our Troops

Rangers To Wear Commemorative Remembrance Day Jersey

The 3rd Annual Remembrance Day Jersey Auction will pay tribute to the many veterans who fought battle for us all. The Rangers will be wearing a special commemorative Remembrance Day Jersey for their game on Friday, November 2, 2007 against the Erie Otters.
The special jersey to be worn once portrays the Remembrance Day theme as well as honours the 1956 K-W Dutchmen Canadian Olympic Hockey Team. The Jersey has been designed to be fully crested with Rangers shields on the shoulder and the maple leaf with a poppy centred on the chest. The Jersey is in a Rangers blue colour.
During the game a silent auction will take place. Fans may bid on any of the jerseys that are worn. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the 78th Fraser Highlanders Fort Conestoga Garrison and a number of organizations it has chosen to support as part of its mandate to remember not only the past, but to also be mindful of the present. Beneficiaries have included the KW Poppy Fund and the London Military Family Resource Centre in support of soldiers in Afghanistan.
In the past 2 years the Remembrance Day Jersey Auction has raised more than $30,000 for various beneficiaries.
We also ask that fans attending the game wear red in support of our troops and to pay tribute to our veterans.

The Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade being held in Kitchener on October 8th will be honouring our returning Afghan veterans, along with veterans of other recent peacekeeping missions. As well, families of our soldiers will be present as a continuing support to our sons and daughters, family members and friends of returning soldiers and those currently serving overseas.

Organizers are calling on all available veterans to step forward and be recognized for their service to the country.
The parade takes place on Monday morning.

Come out and meet the families at 8:00 am Line up at King and University in Waterloo.

Parade travels along King Street from King and Erb in Waterloo at 8:30 am to King and Pandora in Kitchener.

Veterans' Bill Of Rights

The Polish Legion on Wellington Street Kitchener was packed with veterans bearing their medals of honour. A reminder of battles fought, comrades lost, and to some, years of living with disabilities without adequate financial resources and meaningful, effective representation.
Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s announced that Canada’s New Government is following through on its commitment to create a Veterans’ Bill of Rights and a Veterans’’ Ombudsman. The announcement should mean that Veterans past present and future will be treated with respect and not end up the forgotten ones when the fighting stops.
“The brave men and women of the Canadian Forces and RCMP have always acted courageously when called upon; and it’s because Veterans have always been willing to stand up for our country and its interests, Canada’s New Government is standing by them now,” said the Prime Minister.
The Bill of Rights will take effect immediately; will strengthen the government’s ability to respond quickly and fairly, to the concerns of Canada’s Veterans. It is a clear and concise statement that will allow Veterans Affairs to continue to ensure every Canadian veteran is treated with respect, with dignity and with fairness.
The Ombudsman, whom is yet to be chosen, will operate at arms-length from the government, and will play an important role in raising the awareness of the needs and concerns of Veterans. The Ombudsman will submit a report to the Minister on an annual basis, which will be tabled in Parliament.
“Our Veterans have given their very best to Canada,” said Prime Minister Harper. “Through the Veterans’ Bill of Rights and Veterans’ Ombudsman, our government is taking yet another step to ensure that Canada does its very best for the,” he said in closing.
A symbolic presentation was then made by the Prime Minister and Veterans Affairs Minister Greg Thompson to a local Veteran.

Note: Unfortunately, PM Harper did not define Veteran in his speech. Who is he referring to? We can assume it is all Veterans - from WWI to present soldiers returning from Afghanistan, but we need to know.
